Shoot Out At West LA

It was a Gunslinger’s dream as The WFD Extreme Sport Drumming Events, Battle Of The Hands & Battle Of The Feet Guinness World Record Challenge, invaded West L.A. Music on January 23, 2001. WLA’s own "Mr. Extreme" Glenn Noyes, hosted the Extreme Sport Drumming event. The referee for the evening was the always-entertaining Rikki Rockett of Poison who proved capable of keeping the top twenty fastest California Hired Guns in line.

The entire WFD organization was on hand including creators Boo McAfee and Craig Alan, WFD Ring Girls, full staging gear, Guinness World’s Fastest Drummer, Johnny Rabb, as well as the WFD Fastest Feet Champion, Tim Waterson and the WFD Championship Belt. Zoro and Johnny Rabb treated the packed house to a "Dueling Groove" half time show. Glen Sobel won the Battle of the Hands event playing an amazing 1,009 single strokes in 60 seconds while Dean Cuadra won the Battle of the Feet with a score of 815 singles in 60 seconds. Both Glen and Dean are now listed as the two Fastest Drummers in CA.

"The WFD extreme drumming finals turned out much better and more exciting than ever anticipated! I feel we have tapped onto something that is going to continue to grow in huge numbers as more drummers around the world find out about these events. My entire staff is very excited and are already looking forward to next years event which I know will be bigger and better!!" — Glenn Noyes

All contestants competed on a Remo practice pad for hands and a Mapex bass drum using Axis Longboard A pedals for feet. The Drumometer recorded all scores. The winners received over $4,000.00 in prizes.

"This is real excitement, I was ringside the entire time. I want this to be a West L.A. Music Annual Event". Says WLA’s store manager, Rick Waite, who by the way had a very good run and is already in training for next year’s competition. WOW!

The WFD Battles are an on-going yearlong competition held at music stores and drum shops worldwide in search of the World’s Fastest Drummer. Newest participants include Marco Minneman, Mike Mangini and Virgil Donati. Upcoming events for March-April, 2001 include San Francisco, CA and Pensacola, FL.

Sponsors of the event were DRUM!, Mapex, Axis Percussion, Johnny Rabb Sticks, Mainline, Zildjian, DW, Pearl, AKG, Drumometer and Diggitt Stick Weights.
