Innovative Series Is First to Focus on Combo Playing for a Range of Popular Instruments

Berklee Press, the publishing arm of the renowned Berklee College of Music, has launched a first-of-its-kind, interactive series of instructional books and CDs that teaches rock, jazz and pop musicians not only how to play, but how to play successfully in a band. Berklee Practice Method: Get Your Band Together provides instruction in individual instruments, with a focus on the nuances of timing, inflection, tone, and improvisation that are the hallmarks of successful ensemble performance.

"The Berklee Practice Method is an effective way for you to read charts and play along with other musicians in a real-time playing environment," said Jeff Berlin, a fusion bassist who has played with such artists as John McLaughlin, Yes, Gil Evans, and George Benson, and who helped found the Bass Institute of Technology. "The books will keep your nose in the music and the CDs will keep your ears open to the goings-on of the other musicians."

Launched this year, the series includes volumes for guitar, bass, drum set, keyboard, and tenor and alto sax. Titles for voice, trombone, trumpet, vibraphone, and violin will be released over the next year. The CD included with each book breaks down by instrument the same play-along song samples and practice routines, allowing a band to use the series to improve its playing collaboratively. Musicians hear just how to play their part and how it fits into the ensemble. A variety of popular styles are covered, including rock, funk, jazz, blues, swing, and bossa nova.

The Berklee Practice Method has been developed by the Berklee College of Music faculty specifically to develop musicians' ensemble-playing abilities by strengthening their grasp of theory, and their listening, playing and improvisational skills. The series has proven a boon to educators who want to foster contemporary ensemble performance but who lack ready-to-use charts and play-along materials of sufficient quality. The drum set volume was authored by Ron Savage, Chair of Berklee College's Ensemble Department, Casey Scheuerell, Assistant Professor in the Percussion Department, and the Berklee Faculty.

As part of the series release, Berklee Press, in association with its distributor, Hal Leonard Corporation, is sponsoring a contest for bands that have used the series to get their combos together. To enter, qualifying bands must submit their recording of two songs used in the series. The winning band receives a private performance clinic with Berklee faculty, free travel to Boston, a night on the town, including dinner and concert tickets, a tour of Berklee, publicity, and hotel accommodations. Deadline for entry is November 1, 2001; the winning band will be announced December 1, 2001. For more information on the contest and the books visit Berklee Press at www.berkleepress.com/get_your_band/index.htm.

Berklee Press, the non-profit, educational publishing arm of Berklee College of Music, publishes educational and instructional books, videotapes, DVDs, and interactive products covering all areas of contemporary music education. Recent releases include Turntable Technique: The Art of the DJ, a pioneering book and two-record package on this emerging genre, How to Get a Job In the Music and Recording Industry, and the upcoming Inside the Hits. Berklee Press proceeds go to benefit Berklee College scholarships. Berklee Press products are distributed by the Hal Leonard Corporation. More information is available at www.berkleepress.com.
